Equations for the prediction of normal values for exchangeable sodium, exchangeable potassium, extracellular fluid volume, and total body water.

چکیده
Despite the valuable research information on body electrolytes and water that is gained from isotope dilution studies, these investigations have not become routine clinical procedure. This is partly due to the fact that normal ranges for exchangeable sodium (NaE), exchangeable potassium (KE), extracellular fluid volume (E.C.F.V.), and total body water (T.B.W.) are wide owing to great individual variations in body fat content, so that it is difficult to differentiate normal from disease states.1 2 Also, equations for the prediction of normal values at present available from the literature are based on limited numbers of subjects investigated from single laboratories.

Regression of body compositional abnormalities of heart failure after intracardiac operations.
SUMMARY Alterations in body composition are present in patients with heart disease and conges-tive heart failure, and additional changes occur acutely after corrective surgery. The reversibility and time course of reversion to normal body composition have not been demonstrated. Nine patients were studied preoperatively and 2 to 4 weeks and 6 to 12 mo postoperatively. Measurements were made, usi...
متن کاملPotassium and sodium distribution in cardiac failure.
1. Total body water, extracellular fluid, total exchangeable potassium and total exchangeable sodium were measured by the multiple isotope-dilution technique in eight patients with congestive cardiac failure. Measurements were made on each patient while in failure and then again after treatment and recovery. 2. Compared with five control subjects in whom the same measurements were made, patient...
متن کاملIntracellular electrolyte depletion in patients with ileostomies.
Fourteen apparently healthy patients with ileostomies were found to be depleted of total exchangeable sodium and potassium, but had normal serum electrolyte concentrations and normal extracellular fluid and total body water volumes. The low exchangeable sodium and potassiums were thus primarily due to depletion of the intracellular compartment. There was no evidence of renal or intestinal conse...
متن کاملAcute alterations of body composition after open intracardiac operations.
The body composition of patients with heart disease is acutely altered by surgical intervention. Interrelations and causes of the alterations have not been clear. Twenty patients were studied preoperatively and again 2 to 4 days after open intracardiac operations. In nine, measurements were made of the volumes of total body water, extracellular water, plasma, and red cells, and of the amounts o...
متن کاملThe persistence of high body sodium in previously edematous patients with heart disease.
IN PATIENTS with heart disease the presence of edema is indicative of an increase in extracellular fluid volume. Since the sodium concentration of extracellular fluid is about 140 mEq. per liter, expansion of the extracellular space is accompanied by the accumulation of large quantities of sodium. The magnitude of sodium accumulation has been demonstrated through measurement of total exchangeab...
